Cerebral Palsy – Palo Alto Sub-Committee of SELPA 1 CAC

Cerebral palsy (CP) refers to a group of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement, muscle coordination, balance and posture. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles. It is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that control muscle movements Often problems include: poor coordination, stiff muscles, weak muscles, trouble swallowing or speaking, and tremors among others. There may also be problems with sensation, vision, and hearing. The effect of cerebral palsy on functional abilities varies greatly.
